Agenda overview
Under the 2024 Electricity Market Design Reform, EU Member States are now required to assess the flexibility needs of their power systems for the decade ahead and set indicative national objectives for non-fossil flexibility. This exercise, known as the Flexibility Needs Assessment (FNA), will play a central role in shaping storage investment signals across Europe.
To help practitioners apply the methodology, the European Commission's Joint Research Centre has published a dedicated guide for Member States and regulators. How this methodology is translated at national level will, in large part, determine the market opportunity for energy storage in the years ahead.
Ireland offers one of the first and most instructive case studies: a high wind penetration system, an island grid, and a dedicated national storage policy framework already in place. Its FNA result provides a concrete example of how the methodology plays out in practice and what it means for storage deployment.
This evening event brings together representatives from the Joint Research Centre, EirGrid (Ireland's TSO), and the Irish Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment for a moderated panel discussion, followed by a networking reception open to storage industry stakeholders, regulators, and policymakers.
